Resumen

Las costas rocosas del extremo sur de Tierra del Fuego (Argentina) se caracterizan por tener playas de cantos rodados. En la zona media y baja del intermareal de Ensenada Zaratiegui se encuentra la estrella de mar incubadora Anasterias antarctica (Lutken 1857). Las hembras incuban los embriones sobre la boca y no se alimentan durante el período de incubación. A través de la asignación de antioxidantes a las gónadas, las hembras capaces de reproducirse protegerán a los futuros embriones. Dado que los embriones dependen exclusivamente del aporte materno, utilizan los nutrientes y antioxidantes provenientes de los oocitos. Así, la incubación genera un costo energético elevado en las hembras.

The rocky coasts of the extreme south of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina) are characterized by their pebbly beaches. In the middle and bottom of the intertidal zone in Zaratiegui Cove, incubator sea star Anasterias antarctica can be found (Lutken 1857). The females incubate their embryos over their mouths and don’t eat during the incubation period. Through the allocation of antioxidants to the gonads, the females capable of reproduction will protect the future embryos. Given that the embryos depend exclusively on maternal contributions, they utilize the nutrients and antioxidants from the oocytes. Therefore, the incubation generates a high energy cost in the females.
