Los pingüinos del continente blanco

Resumen

Indefectiblemente, cuando pensamos en pingüinos pensamos también en lugares remotos y sentimos admiración y ternura por esas criaturas. ¿Cómo no? Si son tan carismáticos y simpáticos: su forma de caminar, cómo se acicalan, como dan de comer a sus pichones y los hermosos espacios que han sabido conquistar para establecer sus colonias. Existen 18 especies de pingüinos en el mundo, que habitan exclusivamente en el hemisferio sur, aunque sólo cuatro anidan en Antártida. El resto se distribuyen en Islas Sub-Antárticas, Sud-África, Australia, Nueva Zelanda y Sud-América. Estas 4 especies de pingüino son el mayor componente de la biomasa de aves del continente Antártico, y son: el papúa (Pygoscelis papua), el barbijo (Pygoscelis antarticus), el adélia (Pygoscelis adeliae) y el emperador (Aptenodytes forsteri).

Fantastic four. Penguins of the white continent

            Inevitably, when we think about penguins, we also think about remote places and feel admiration and tenderness for them. How could you not? They are very charismatic and friendly: their way of walking, how they groom, how they feed their chicks, and the beautiful spaces that they have chosen to establish their colonies. There are 18 species of penguins in the world that live exclusively in the southern hemisphere, with only four nesting in Antarctica. The rest are distributed in the Sub-Antarctic islands, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and South America. These four penguin species compose the largest portion of biomass of birds in the Antarctic continent: Gentoo (Pygoscelis papua), Chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarticus), Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae), and Emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri).
