Nuevas oportunidades en investigaciones socio-ecológicas a través del sonido

Resumen

Un “paisaje sonoro” (soundscape en inglés) constituye la totalidad de los sonidos que ocurren en un lugar durante un período de tiempo determinado, ya sean biológicos, geofísicos y/o tecnológicos. Los animales contribuyen significativamente en los paisajes sonoros, y éstos a su vez influyen en el comportamiento de los animales, siendo el acústico un factor muy importante para sus vidas. En ambientes terrestres y acuáticos, tanto mamíferos como aves, anfibios, reptiles, insectos y peces usan el sonido para comunicarse, identificar predadores y presas, desplazarse e incluso seleccionar hábitats. Los distintos animales producen una diversidad
de sonidos, y es posible que cada sonido contenga información sobre la especie y el comportamiento del individuo que lo produjo.

Abstract

Listening to Tierra del Fuego. New opportunities in socio-ecological investigations through sound

In this work, we first describe the importance of sound in socio-ecological systems and the characteristics of soundscapes in Tierra del Fuego. After, we present our acoustic research that focus on 1) acoustically monitor penguins, 2) analysis of the impact of the north American beaver (Castor canadensis) on the community of forest birds, and 3) human perception of soundscapes. From the result of this novel research, we suggest the implementation of an outreach program that uses natural soundscapes to be able to promote the conservation of the environment, getting people closer to a ‘direct sensorial experience’ with nature.
