Resumen

A mil kilómetros de Ushuaia, la península Antártica es un viaje de ensueño para muchas personas. Con el turismo antártico, más de 60 mil personas cumplen este sueño cada año. La mayoría de ellos viaja al desolado continente en barco. Ushuaia es uno de los puertos más australes del mundo y por eso, carga con mucho tráfico de cruceros. La península antártica, la región del continente que se extiende hacia Sudamérica, recibe visitas turísticas de forma creciente cada año. Según un estudio de 2019 realizado por la Dra. Marisol Vereda, docente investigadora de la Universidad Nacional de Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur, el turismo antártico ha crecido significativamente en la última década. Entre 2010-2020, hubo aproximadamente 375 mil visitantes, y 2100 viajes a Antártida. El turismo antártico comenzó en la década de 1950. La mayoría de los viajes turísticos se han realizado desde el año 2000 en adelante, representando el 89% de todas las visitas turísticas al continente.

One thousand kilometers from Ushuaia, the Antarctic Peninsula is a dream journey for many.Antarctic tourism enables more than sixty thousand people to accomplish this dream each year.The majority of them travel to the desolate continent by boat. Since Ushuaia is one of thesouthern-most ports in the world, it sees much of this cruise-ship traffic on its piers. TheAntarctic Peninsula, the region of the continent which extends toward South America, isreceiving a growing number of tourist visits each year. According to a 2019 study by Dr. MarisolVereda, a professor and researcher at the Universidad Nacional de Tierra del Fuego, Antártidae Islas del Atlántico Sur, Antarctic tourism has grown significantly in the last decade. Between2010-2020, there were approximately 375 thousand visitors and 2,100 trips to Antarctica.Antarctic tourism beganin the 1950s, but 89% of all tourist trips to the continent have takenplace since the year 2000. After the decline in tourism generated by COVID-19, Antarctictourism has recovered. In the 2022-2023 season, the IAATO (International Association ofAntarctic Tour Operators) reported that 71,258 tourists disembarked on the white continentwhile 32,730 saw it from their ship only. The majority of these boats leave from the port ofUshuaia.
