Explorando las aguas del AMP Yaganes

Resumen

¡En noviembre del 2022 comenzamos a vivir la campaña a bordo del Buque Oceanográfico ARA Austral! Esta salida tuvo algo especial, ya que fue la primera campaña que se realizó al Área Marina Protegida Yaganes (AMPY). Con mucha expectativa arrancamos nuestro trabajo de campo que duraría 20 días navegando y conociendo más sobre el AMPY. Subimos en representación del Laboratorio de Ecología y Conservación de Vida Silvestre del Centro Austral de Investigaciones Científicas, con el objetivo de relevar aves y mamíferos marinos mediante observación directa y, para cetáceos, a través de registros acústicos utilizando hidrófonos.
En el año 2018, bajo la Ley Nacional N° 27.490, se creó la tercera área marina protegida, el AMPY. La misma se ubica en la región subantártica, al sur de la Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, en el Pasaje de Drake (Mar de Hoces) (FIGURA 1). Es un área de gran importancia, tanto física como biológica, ya que al converger los océanos Pacífico y Atlántico es influenciada por varias corrientes oceanográficas, propiciando una gran productividad y, por ende, una gran diversidad marina por estudiar.

Beyond the horizon: Exploring the waters of the Yaganes MPA 

In November 2022 we began to live the campaign aboard the ARA Austral Oceanographic Vessel! This outing had something special, since it was the first campaign that was carried out to the Yaganes Marine Protected Area (AMPY). With great expectation we started our field work that would last 20 days sailing and learning more about the AMPY. We went up on behalf of the Laboratory of Ecology and Wildlife Conservation of the Austral Center for Scientific Research, with the aim of surveying birds and marine mammals through direct observation and, for cetaceans, through acoustic recordings using hydrophones.
In 2018, under National Law No. 27,490, the third marine protected area, the AMPY, was created. It is located in the sub-Antarctic region, south of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, in the Drake Passage (Mar de Hoces) (FIGURE 1). It is an area of ​​great importance, both physical and biological, since the convergence of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans is influenced by various oceanographic currents, promoting great productivity and, therefore, great marine diversity to study.
