Abstract

Burdwood Bank: A submerged oasis in the South Atlantic. Physical and biological oceanography of the Marine Protected Area Namuncurá/ Burdwood Bank

The Burdwood Bank is situated in a zone where various powerful Southwestern Atlantic currents meet. The peculiar physical characteristics of the Burdwood Bank permit a certain water retention and plankton presence above it and the important biological carbon pump on its edges. The biological carbon pump, together with the microbial pump, represent mechanisms through which the ocean contributes to the retention of carbon and the reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (greenhouse gas) and, therefore, counteracts global warming.
